Area Code Change to 262

On Saturday September 25th 1999 the 414 area code will begin it's change over to the new 262 area code. The old 414 area code will still work until March 4th 2000. Click Here for more info from Ameritech

Since AcroNet is a local Internet service provider, you do not dial long distance and therefore will be unaffected by this change if you do nothing! So you don't need to do anything at all, just keep on dialing as you always have. However, if you change the area code in one place you MUST change it in the other as well. See the detailed instructions below.

Windows 3.1 (yes, some people are still running it) could care less about your area code and is unaffected.

If you are running Windows 95/98/NT4 and you desire to change your computer's settings to reflect the new area code, you will need to change it in two places:

  1. My Computer - Control Panel - Modems - Dialing Properties
  2. My Computer - Dial Up Networking - AcroNet Properties.

Changing The System Area Code:

  1. Point the mouse pointer at the My Computer icon on the desktop and double-click the left button to open it.
  2. Point the mouse pointer at the Control Panel icon in My Computer and double-click the left button to open it.
  3. Point the mouse pointer at the Modems icon in the Control Panel and double-click the left button to open it.
  4. Point the mouse pointer at the Dialing Properties icon and double-click the left button to open it.
  5. Point the mouse pointer at the white box containing the area code (414), delete the 414 using either the Backspace or Delete keys on your keyboard. Type in the new area code: 262 (Do NOT type in your zip code.)
  6. Click on OK and close all open windows by clicking the |X| in the top right corner of each window.

 

Changing The Area Code For The Number You Dial:

  1. Point the mouse pointer at the My Computer icon on the desktop and double-click the left button to open it.
  2. Point the mouse pointer at the Dial-Up Networking icon in My Computer and double-click the left button to open it.
  3. Point the mouse pointer at the AcroNet icon in Dial-Up Networking and single-click the RIGHT mouse button to open the menu.
  4. Point the mouse pointer to the Properties option at the bottom of the menu and single-click the LEFT mouse button.
  5. Point the mouse pointer at the white box containing the area code (414), delete the 414 using either the Backspace or Delete keys on your keyboard. Type in the new area code: 262
  6. Click on OK and close all open windows by clicking the |X| in the top right corner of each window.

You are now ready to go.
