Windows 98, 98 Second Edition &
Windows Millenium Edition Setup


Use this information if your computer came with Windows 98 or if you upgrade to Windows 98.


If you purchased a computer or a copy of Windows 98 after 8/1/1999, you probably have Windows 98 SE (Second Edition). Use these instructions to install Windows 98 Second Edition only. If you have the first edition of Windows 98, go to page 2

 

Windows Millenium & 98 Second Edition Setup

1. Open My Computer, open the Control Panel, open Internet Options, click on the Connections tab, click on the Setup button at the top.

2. You will see a "Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard" screen.

3. Choose the third option: "I want to set up my internet connection manually..." Then click Next.

4. You will see a "Setting up Your Internet Connection" screen. Choose the top option: I connect through a phone line and a modem. Then click Next

5. You will see a "Internet Account Connection Information" screen. Enter your area code (262) in the "AreaCode" box. Enter the phone number you use to dial us in the "Telephone Number" box. Phone Number Locator Click NEXT

6. Set the "User Name" to your username (lower case). For example, jsmith

7. Set the "Password" to your password (case-sensitive). Click NEXT

8. Change the "Connection Name" label to "AcroNet" Then click Next.

9. You will see the "Set Up Your Internet Mail Account" screen. Choose Yes and click Next.

10. You will see a "Internet Mail Account" screen. Select "Create a new internet mail account" then click Next.

11. Fill in your real name (e.g. John Smithl) for your "Display Name", then click Next.

12. You will see a "Internet E-Mail Address" screen. Enter username@acronet.net in the "E-Mail Address" box. (Username = your chosen Internet name. For example jsmith.) Check your Subscriber Info sheet.

13. You will see a "E-Mail Server Names" screen. Do not change "My incoming mail server is a POP3 server."

14. Set the "Incoming Mai (POP3) server" to mail.acronet.net

15. Set the "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server" to mail.acronet.net, then click Next.

16. You will see a "Internet Mail Logon" screen.

17. Set the "Account Name" to your username (lower case). For example, jsmith

18. Set the "Password" to your password (case-sensitive).

19. Do NOT check "Logon using secure password authentication." Click Next.

20. You will see a "Completing Internet Connection Wizard" screen. Click Finish. This should complete the wizard and set up Windows 98 Second Edition.

21. Click on the blue "e" icon on your desktop to launch Internet Explorer, your web browser. The computer will dial and connect you to the Internet and your default start page will be displayed in the browser window.

22. To set AcroNet as your default start page: click on the TOOLS menu in your browser and select INTERNET OPTIONS (this can also be found in your Windows Control Panel.) In the box labeled Home Page Address, type in www.acronet.net and then click on OK.

23. To access email, click on the MAIL toolbar entry in your browser, or select the Outlook Express icon on your desktop.


Windows 98 Setup (First Edition)

If your PC came with Windows 98, it will have a "Connect to Internet" icon on the desktop. When you click on this icon Windows 98 will start the Internet connection wizard.

An alternate way to start the wizard is to click on the Start button, then choose Program, then select Internet Explorer, and finally Connection Wizard.

Once you start the Internet connection wizard, use the following procedure to set up for our service.

  1. The first screen will offer you three options. Choose the middle one: I have an existing Internet account...Then click Next.
  2. The second screen will offer you two options. Choose the top option: Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet service provider ... Then click Next
  3. At the Set up your Internet Connection screen choose Connect using my phone line. Then click Next.
  4. At the Dial-Up Connection screen choose Create a new dial-up connection. Then click Next.
  5. At the Phone Number screen enter an appropriate phone number: See your Subscriber Info sheet.
  6. At the User Name and Password screen enter your user name. Make sure it is lower case, for example: jsmith. Enter your password in (case-sensitive.) Then click Next.
  7. At the Advanced Settings screen choose Yes. Then click Next.
  8. At the Connection Type screen choose PPP. Then click Next.
  9. At the Login Procedure screen choose I don't need to type anything when logging on. Then click Next.
  10. At the IP Address Screen choose My Internet service provider automatically assigns me one. Then click Next.
  11. At the DNS Server Address screen choose Always use the following. Two boxes will light up. In the "DNS Server" box enter "66.102.117.6" [no quotes]. In the "Alternate DNS Server" box enter "207.7.4.66" [no quotes] Then click Next.
  12. At the Dial-Up Connection Name screen enter "AcroNet". Then click Next.
  13. At the Set Up Your Internet Mail Account screen choose Yes then click Next.
  14. At the Display Name screen enter your real name. Then click Next.
  15. At the Internet E-Mail Address screen enter your e-mail address, which is your user name plus "@acronet.net". For example: jsmith@acronet.net [no spaces, lower case]. Then click Next.
  16. At the E-Mail Server screen enter "mail.acronet.net" [no quotes] behind Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server. Enter "mail.acronet.net" [no quotes] behind Outgoing mail (SMTP) server. Then click Next.
  17. At the Internet Mail Logon screen enter in your user name (e.g. jsmith) behind the POP account name. Enter your internet password behind Password. Then click Next.
  18. At the Friendly Name screen enter any name you want as your Internet Mail Account Name. Then click Next.
  19. At the Set Up Your Internet News Account screen choose Yes. Then click Next.
  20. At the Your Name screen enter in your real name. Then click Next.
  21. At the Internet News E-Mail Address screen enter in your e-mail address (e.g. jsmith@acronet.net) [no spaces, lower case]. Then click Next.
  22. At the Internet News Server Name screen enter "news.acronet.net" [no quotes]. Then click Next.
  23. At the Friendly Name screen enter anything you want. Then click Next.
  24. At the Set Up Your Internet Directory Service click No. Then click Next.
  25. At the Complete Configuration screen click Finish. This should complete the wizard and set you up for our service.
  26. Click on the blue "e" icon on your desktop to launch Internet Explorer, your web browser. The computer will dial and connect you to the Internet and your default start page will be displayed in the browser window.
