CHARTER

OF THE INSTITUTE FOR HUNGARIAN STUDIES

THE INSTITUTE FOR HUNGARIAN STUDIES was organized under the above name in The United States of America in the year 1996 based upon the following charter:

NAME: The Institute for Hungarian Studies (henceforth IHS, or "the Institute") contains as its basic tenets the following:

  1. As an institute for Hungarian studies, IHS will be occupied solely with subjects concerning Hungarian cultural heritage, the encouragement of research in Hungarian issues, and the dissemination of knowledge gained. Research shall encompass all fields of related sciences, such as archaeology, anthropology, ethnography, music, dance, history, and all related fields of study.
  2. Each member of the Institute will actively pursue the goals of the Institute.
GOALS:
  1. Short term: to promote awareness of the evidence of Hungarian origins within the Carpathian basin.
  2. Long term: ongoing collection of data concerning Hungarian culture, primarily from within the Carpathian homeland and secondarily from the regions of subsequent cultural expansion.
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES:
  1. The discussion of Hungarian history based on original source materials.
    1. facts of Hungarian presence in the Carpathian basin since prehistoric times.
    2. secondary homes beyond the Carpathian valley.
  2. The finding and cataloging of Hungarian basic historical works outside of her territory, such as
    1. the Hungarian writings collected by the Vatican and remaining in their custody.
    2. all historical documents that were sold out by the recent communist regime to western libraries.
  3. To give information to the Hungarian public of all research pertaining to their cultural heritage.
  4. To find and translate works concerning Hungarian history which will enable Hungarian scholars to place these findings within historical framework.
  5. To help to bring about a young scholar generation unhampered by outdated methods of research.
  6. To publish the findings in a periodic journal of Hungarian Studies (referred to henceforth as Journal). This Journal will be published in both Hungarian and English.
  7. To help preserve and cultivate the Hungarian language.
  8. To help standardize new Hungarian words covering subjects specific to our century. These will be submitted to a committee of linguists for discussion and incorporation into the officially accepted dictionaries.
